Home 5 News 5 Call For Proposals: Business Case Development for National Industrial Symbiosis Programme

26 October 2016

The CSIR and NCPC-SA have put out a tender for The Provision of Development of a Strategy for Industrial Symbiosis in South Africa and develop an Associated Business Case. Submissions will close 24 October at 12h00.

Introduction

The National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA) is an industry sustainability programme of Department of Trade and Industry (the dti). The purpose of the Centre is to promote the adoption and implementation of Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) within the South African industry sectors, to enable them to become more competitive and strengthen their market access. In order to ensure its relevance the NCPC-SA aligns its sectoral focus with the dti’s Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP).

Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is the use of unused or residual resources (e.g. materials, energy, water, infrastructure/assets, logistics and expertise) of one company by another. These “synergies” between companies typically result in mutual economic, social and environmental benefits. There are two primary approaches to the implementation of IS, namely developing synergies between
companies in close geographical proximity as part of the development of eco-industrial parks (EIPs) or developing synergies at a regional or even national scale, typically through a facilitated industrial symbiosis programme. These approaches need not be mutually exclusive and can be used in a complementary or mutually reinforcing way to enable the optimal economic and
environmental opportunities for businesses and the economy more generally to be realised.

Given that IS has the potential to contribute to achieving a number of national economic development and environmental policy goals and industrial development imperatives, the NCPC-SA is seeking to develop a Strategy for IS in South Africa and an associated Business Case for the implementation of IS.
